Our Philosophy
We were inspired by the credo of the rave movement – Peace Love Unity Respect, or more commonly PLUR* – to adopt Community Respect Exploration Diversity, or CRED, as our core philosophy for ABQFX. Just as PLUR may be interpreted as the raver's essential philosophy of life with respect to interpersonal relationships, CRED may be interpreted as our essential philosophy of life with respect to dance events. PLUR also gives basic directions on how people are expected to behave at a rave gathering, and CRED also gives basic directions on how people are expected to behave at ABQFX.
We at ABQFX believe in our community – its passion, its energy, and its creativity. We want to invest in our community and we want our community to invest in itself. How have we designed ABQFX to promote and encourage community? We have scheduled plenty of time to connect with others. We have provided an arena in which participants can create and share what's important to them, as well as an environment in which all levels of dancers will work together to learn and explore. We have offered scholarships and volunteer opportunities for those who want to be part of the community but have limited financial means.
We at ABQFX believe in respect – not just as an attitude, but as the way we act toward one another. How have we designed ABQFX to promote and encourage respect? We have compensated everyone whose efforts contribute to the success of the event. We have designated a VIP coordinator to take care of our instructors and music gurus, so they do not have to sweat the small stuff, but can focus on what leaves them feeling respected and fulfilled. We have acknowledged, with special shout-outs and thank-yous on our website, people and other events that inspired us.
We at ABQFX believe in exploration – of the capabilities of our minds and bodies, of the possibilities in a partnership, of the potential for communication through movement, musicality, and form. How have we designed ABQFX to promote and encourage exploration? We have planned a relaxed event with opportunities to share, learn, and interact with teachers and other attendees, both on and off the dance floor. We have arranged a variety of learning opportunities, knowing that different people learn most effectively in different ways: mini-private lessons for brief, focused individual instruction; private lessons for longer, more detailed individual instruction; classes for group instruction; practicas for individual feedback in a social-dance setting; and evening dances for playing and experimenting with others on the social dance floor.
We at ABQFX believe in diversity – of the music to which we dance, of the dances we use to explore our relationship to physical and emotional expression, and of those who make up our community. How have we designed ABQFX to promote and encourage diversity? We have provided a safe space to support us in learning to embrace our differences. We have selected teachers with different areas of expertise to help us challenge ourselves and our understanding of dance. We have chosen DJs with a variety of musical tastes so that we can enjoy our preferred music and dances, as well as open ourselves to what is less familiar.
